PSJA school district to celebrate 100 years

The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District is marking its 100th anniversary with a celebration slated Saturday evening.

The school district announced a Community Kick-Off Event which will feature a special parade of schools, a performance by all the PSJA high school bands and a fireworks show grand finale.

According to a news release, the event will also feature a choir of over 1,000 PSJA students singing the district’s new “PSJA Family” song, written by PSJA Elementary Specialist Domingo Porras to commemorate the district’s 100-year legacy.

It was on March 15, 1919 that Common School District No. 4 in Hidalgo County became Pharr- San Juan Independent School District. In 1959, Alamo merged with the district and established the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District, which now caters to over 32,000 students.

The event is scheduled for Saturday at PSJA Stadium-DHR Field, which is located at 703 E. Sam Houston Blvd. in Pharr. It is expected to run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and is open to the general public.
