Starship Hopper prototype engine tested at Boca Chica

Online video footage published Wednesday shows SpaceX testing the prototype Starship Hopper’s Raptor engine at Boca Chica Beach.

The static fire test is the pinnacle of three weeks of off-and-on testing at the site.

SpaceX transported the Starship Hopper prototype from the company’s yard about 1.5 miles east of Boca Chica Beach on March 8 for preparation for checking new ground systems and conducting the short static fire test of its single, liquid oxygen-methane fueled Raptor engine.

The prototype being tested is suborbital, but SpaceX is building an orbital version at Boca Chica.

The final product, once built, could take the first humans to Mars.
