Newly elected officials to be sworn-in

At the start of the new year, newly elected leaders serving the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court and judgeships will be sworn-in at ceremonies scheduled for this week.

Voters in November elected a new county judge and commissioner to Hidalgo County Commissioners Court.

Commissioner-elect Ellie Torres, of Edinburg, will be sworn-in Tuesday to represent Hidalgo County Precinct 4, an area encompassing the greater Edinburg area and parts of McAllen.

Torres defeated incumbent Commissioner Joseph Palacios during the Democratic Primary in March. Torres, a former Edinburg school board trustee, faced no Republican challenger for the commission seat on the November ballot.

Hidalgo County Judge-Elect Richard Cortez will take the reigns of the commissioners court, replacing outgoing County Judge Ramon Garcia, who declined to seek re-election. Cortez will be sworn-in Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremonies are open to the public.
