Retired Cameron County judge arrested for DWI

A retired Cameron County district court judge was arrested Wednesday on a driving while intoxicated charge in Palmview, according to court records.

Palmview police arrested Roberto “Robert” Garza, a visiting judge for the 5th Administrative Judicial Region, which oversees the Rio Grande Valley, on charges of evading arrest with a motor vehicle and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

The 65-year-old was booked into the Hidalgo County jail at 1:53 p.m., according to jail staff.

A Palmview Municipal Court judge set Garza’s cash bond at $25,000, and he was released Wednesday evening.

The probable cause affidavits tied to the arrest were not available after business hours Wednesday.

Garza frequently hears cases in Hidalgo, Cameron and Starr counties and was appointed to preside over Hidalgo County’s 93rd District Court in the interim between Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado’s suspension from the bench and the appointment of Jaime Tijerina.
